Buying engagement rings online - Basics of Diamond

First you have to decide which diamond shape do you want. There are various shapes to pick from, but most of them are cut in a round-brilliant shape.

The beauty and value is determined by the 4C’s, which are the colour, carat weight, clarity, and cut of a diamond.

Gem Scan LogoGIA and Gem Scan, Canada's largest gemological laboratory grades the clarity, colour, carat weight, and cut of every diamond and it is accepted by the insurance companies all over Canada.

Among the various shapes in diamonds, the most admired shapes are given below.

Diamond’s weights are measured by Carat. It derives from the unit weight that a carob seed has. Weight of 1 carat was equal to that of one seed, but now it is 1/42nd of an ounce or 200 mg (0.20 grams).

One carat is split into one hundred points.
A diamond of quarter-carat is equal to 25 points (0.25 carat/ct.)
And, diamond of half-carat is equal to 50 points (0.50 carat/ct.)

Diamonds inclusions are identifying marks that occur inside a gemstone. The stone’s beauty is hampered by them, so the fewer the inclusions are, the more beautiful the diamond is. Many inclusions are caused by the traces of some other minerals stuck within the stone during the development of it. The number, colour, size, nature, and location of any inclusions in a diamond determine the clarity. Engagement rings for sale that have diamonds with fewer inclusions will be higher graded. They reflect more light and are pricier.

There are many colours of diamond but the ones mainly used on jewellery vary between nearly colourless to slight yellow or sometimes brownish colour. White light passes through colourless diamonds and spread in different colours. While most of the diamonds are colourless, there are minor shade differences among diamonds. The more colourless the diamond is, the more value it holds.

How much light a diamond will reflect and refract depends on the way it is cut and polished. Diamonds that are cut in good proportions allow light to be reflected internally between facets then spread along the top. Light will disperse through the side or bottom if it is not cut correctly. The better the cut, the greater the brilliance and sparkle, and the higher will be the value.
